In this week's article, we will give you answers to some of the most frequently asked questions about IVF treatment.

Most Frequently Asked Questions About IVF

If both couples do not have a medical problem, but pregnancy cannot be achieved, what is the procedure?

If no problems are detected, we consider these patients as infertile patients whose cause cannot be fully explained. Vaccination treatment can be given to these patients if the age is appropriate. If there is no benefit from vaccination treatments, other assisted reproductive techniques; Microinjection type in vitro fertilization should be performed especially by applying the IMSI technique.

How long should patients who are older than 37 wait?

They are considered infertile if the couple do not become pregnant despite one year of unprotected, regular sexual intercourse. However, in patients older than 37 years of age, it may not be very accurate to wait for one year. In this respect, it would be correct for elderly patients to consult an infertility specialist if they cannot conceive in the first six months of marriage.

How many times can IVF be tried?

As long as the patient has sperm, egg and uterus, medical in vitro fertilization can be tried. However, we know that the patient's chance of pregnancy decreases after the fifth attempt. In addition, the age of the patient is among the important factors. After the age of 40, the chance of conceiving with their own eggs decreases in patients. It is difficult to impose any trial limitations for IVF. However, if there are irreversible problems in the sperm, egg and especially in the uterus, these patients do not benefit from microinjection.

Could there be an ectopic pregnancy as a result of these treatments?

IVF treatment ends with the embryos being taken from the laboratory and placed in the uterus. Embryos transferred into the uterus can sometimes settle into the tubes, into the abdomen or towards the cervix, although the cause cannot be fully explained from time to time. In these cases, tubal pregnancy (pregnancy in the tube), abdominal pregnancy (pregnancy in the abdomen), cervical pregnancies (pregnancy in the cervix) are mentioned. Since these pregnancies are not in the normal uterus, they are called ectopic pregnancies. An ectopic pregnancy may occur in two out of 100 patients.

Do drugs used in the IVF treatment increase the risk of cancer?

Egg growth hormones have been used for about 25-30 years in IVF treatment. To this date, it has not been proven in any way that these drugs cause cancer in studies conducted around the world.

Is the ovarian reserve depleted as a result of these treatments?

Normally, a certain number of egg drafts are prepared each month for egg formation. These blueprints develop and try to form the egg of that month in a race fashion, and one of them takes the lead and creates the egg of that month. The remaining egg drafts, on the other hand, undergo the melting process, which we call atresia, inside the ovary. Our treatment is an approach to obtaining all the eggs that set out by preventing them from melting. Any concern about depletion of ovarian reserve is therefore futile. In other words, these treatments are aimed at obtaining the eggs that will already molt.

Do these drugs have side effects?

The pills, nasal sprays, subcutaneous, vaginal gels and intramuscular drugs we use; If it is used properly in accordance with the doctor's instructions, it is completely for the purpose and has no detected harm. However, if it is used unconsciously, on the patient's own request or on advice, it can create great inconveniences.

What are the factors affecting female fertility?

The most important factor is age. As a woman's age increases, her fertility decreases. After the age of 44, the chances of pregnancy are practically low. Previous sexually transmitted infections, infections affecting the ovaries and tubes also negatively affect the chance of pregnancy.

What are the chances of success in IVF procedure?

Success depends on the woman's age and embryo quality. Pregnancy rates under the age of 30 are around 55-60%, while after the age of 40, it drops to 15-20%.
