Open rhinoplasty starts with an incision made on the middle pole of the nose, called the columella, and continues with the lifting of the nasal skin over the cartilage and bone. Its proponents say “doing it by seeing all the builds works well”. However, why is the revision rate so high, even though many surgeons currently perform open rhinoplasty?
There are also incisions in closed rhinoplasty, but the incisions are located inside the nostril and therefore are not visible. It is difficult for a surgeon who does not have enough experience in this field because it is used in a narrow area. But of course, this is not a surgery performed blindly without seeing anything. Almost every structure we touch can be seen as easily as in open rhinoplasty. This includes the tip of the nose. Every manoeuvre in open rhinoplasty can also be performed in closed rhinoplasty, without opening the nose. Swelling (especially at the tip of the nose) disappears faster in closed rhinoplasty. And in open rhinoplasty, even the surgeon himself cannot see the clear result until he puts and closes the columella stitches.
With a general evaluation, we have numerous very successful colleagues who have performed open rhinoplasty. We can understand that it seems very difficult from afar for a surgeon who does not know the closed technique. But we also do not accept that a surgeon who does not know the technique tells you that you cannot have a closed rhinoplasty. Close rhinoplasty can be a better option if your surgeon is an experienced one!
